Why Can't I Be Jesus?
It starts from a very young age...Christians are indoctrinated with a story that suggests that a mere mortal defied both science and reason to ‘resurrect’ from death, to walk on earth again before ascending into the heavens. Moreover, Christians are also expected to believe that a person known as Jesus Christ, will one day return to earth, perhaps even via a cloud, to create a paradise on earth with his followers. This enduring myth taught to children and believed by billions of adults all around the world is about 2000 years old.
When grown adults are permitted and even encouraged to subscribe to a fallacious myth about a 'historical' superman, it implies that anything on earth is possible. When you combine the accepted myth with current 'New Age' thinking; ‘that everyone is a winner’; worthy of god-like recognition, it is a recipe for disaster. The New Age Christian, is ‘naturally’ entitled to ask the following question, if this Jesus Christ actually existed and is returning, why can't it be me!
Many derivatives of the Messiah Complex exist...including the equally mythical story of the two witnesses, or even angel messengers, but always and importantly the individual is a direct messenger sent from God himself. The logical proposition is; if Elijah, Moses, Abraham, were all picked out by God to do his handy work on earth...there is no reason why the individual can't argue that they to have been selected and in turn have mythical powers just like their heroes did. In fact, choosing anyone less than Jesus Christ, provides the deluded individual with a self-effacing backstop; "Hey, it's not like I'm saying I'm Jesus".
Historically Christians are all supplicating individuals who accept their sin, redemption and duly issued ticket to paradise. However this type of thinking is very hard to reconcile in the modern age, where individuals and their rights are continuously being elevated to deistic levels. The combination of these two elements is set to deliver an exponential increase in psychological pathology in the Christian community; sadly these incidents will be primarily treated within the church, and even more distressing, some Churches will encourage this behaviour in the interest of both drama, and the financial benefits of offering a prophetic ministry.
As a child of a Pentecostal ministry I have personally witnessed the destructive impact of the Messiah Complex on a young family, as an adult, I myself fell prey to its delusional claws, taking my own family into a potentially dangerous situation. The Messiah Complex will continue to exist for as long as the Christian community and the wider world accept the Christian Myth; a myth that permits their members to blur the line between fable and reality.
The legacy of Christ's story is so entrenched in Western Society that it is now known as 'truth'. It is this conviction of ‘truth’ that holds humanity back from realising its true potential. But more importantly, the continual existence of the Christian Superman Myth ensures a disturbing invitation to vulnerable men and women; that are required to make only one small logical step into madness; if Jesus et al are most certainly coming back…why can’t it be?
